Main Screen

This is it. Get used to it.
All of the stuff in the middle of the screen is fluff. Don't let it overwhelm you, they are simply links to current events going on in the world of League of Legends. All of the big buttons ( Getting Started, Server Status, Etc ) are links to pages on the official League of Legends website.

The Hot-spots (In reading order):

Logo / Home Button
The logo, the home button, whatever you want to call it. This sweet little button here will always take you back to the main screen. The only exception is when you have a frontal window, like when you press the Play button or are looking at detailed character information. Those windows will need to be closed first via their X button before the logo button will be usable.

Play Button
This is your primary portal for getting into a game. From here you can enter a practice, normal or ranked game. You can also get to the tutorial by pressing this button.

Summoner Icon Button
The summoner icon button can be used to change your summoner Icon. The number in the bottom right of the icon represents your summoner level.

"Resource Bar"
I personally call this whole section the "resource bar" It shows you how much experience you've earned, how many Riot Points you own, how many Influence points you've acquired and active Boost Information.

Experience will be displayed in purple behind your summoner name and the bar will fill from left to right as you get closer to leveling up as a summoner.

Riot Points (Fist icon) and Influence points (Swords icon) are displayed in numeric value.

The small section at the end is reserved for boost information. The image above shows what an "IP Boost" icon looks like. It also causes the box to have a glowing effect.

The Shop Button
The Shop is where summoners can unlock and purchase new Champions, Skins, Boosts, Runes, Rune Pages, Riot Points and Bundles.

Skins, Bundles and Boosts can only be purchased with Riot Points,
Runes can only be purchased with Influence Points,
Champions and Rune Pages can be unlocked with either RP or IP.

Summoner Profile Button
Your summoner profile is a place for you to view lifetime statistics, recent match history, champion and summoner spell information or edit your runes and masteries. Eventually there will also be Achievements.

Lore Button
The Journal of Justice is a publication within the game world that League of Legends takes place in. If you wish to know more about the lore of the game and possibly get hints to upcoming features and champions be sure to read this.

Help Button
Great little guide to some of the basic concepts of being a summoner and the system. Unfortunately some of the information might be out-dated.

Options Button
This cute little button is where you go when you want to turn off the language filter, and some other stuff. You can Submit Logs here if you come across any weird issues. Press this button sometime to get an idea what else is here. You cannot change any of the in-game options from here.

Friends List
Pressing this button will open up your friends list. You can also see people you've recently played with.

Note: Currently you cannot directly talk to anyone you're not friends with. If you meet someone you'd like to play with again be sure to add them as a friend!

Chat Room
The chat room button will bring up a small list of official chatrooms you can join. One of those options is 'Noob.' It would be a good place to ask questions about the game and help out other noobs. ( maybe even link them here, yeah? wink wink )

Last but not least:

The notification button
This is the thing I end up having to show noobs the most. It's hiding all by itself in the bottom right corner.

You got a friend request? Check the notification button.
You got a game invite? Check the notification button.
You disconnected from the chat service? Check the notification button.

Commonly this little guy will blink red when there is something new to see, but sometimes it's just sad that you don't pay attention to it, so it hides your mail from you until you ask for it so that it can have some affirmation of its existence.

Poor little notification button.
