Items

This is the shop. You can access it by pressing P, or clicking the little green icon next to your gold

In order to be able to buy something from the shop you need to either be standing on your healing pad, the starting point, or be dead. You can look at the shop wherever and whenever, but you should save browsing for appropriate times.

Your champion is limited to holding up to 6 items at a time. These items can be any distribution of equipment or consumables. There are no restrictions from wearing multiple of the same item but effects marked under "Unique" will not stack on the user. All of the statistics above the "unique" tag will stack though.

The infinity edge has a strong unique passive, strong stats, but is one of the most expensive items in the game.
When buying expensive items you can usually buy smaller base items first. Whenever you buy a base item, the remaining cost of the larger item is reduced accordingly. Even with all of the base items purchased there is a final combining fee for building the larger item. That price is included in the total remaining cost. Additionally, when items are combined the base items are removed from your inventory and you're left with only the larger stronger item.

You do not need to purchase all of the base items to build a large item. If you have the gold to pay for the remaining cost you can buy a large item outright. The base items just allow you to buy items and benefit from their stat bonuses while you work towards the more expensive item.

Recommended Items

Each champion has a set of recommended items assembled by the Riot staff that cover a lot of a characters strengths and weaknesses. The items are usually not the best options, but if you've never played the champion before the recommendations will probably yield acceptable results.

The recommended items are seen in the top right of the shop window.
When you find a character that you'd like to learn how to play you should try experimenting with different builds. A "Build" is a cover-all term that incorporates items, runes and masteries specifically chosen with a particular champion in mind. If you're at a loss as to where to start with a champion one thing you can do is look up a guide on how someone else plays them.
